It works, that much I must admit. But it is slow to the point that it is worthless. I am an American on assignment in Japan for 3 years. I wanted to be able to keep my Netflix account and be able to watch the things I’m accustomed to online in the states. Per my handy dandy CNET test seconds ago, w/o HMA, I’m running at a whopping 41872 kbps. On HMA, I’m at an abysmal 561 kpbs. It shows in the quality videos I receive and constant buffering. Sometimes I find the quality isn’t bad, but it’s more of 75% worthless, 25% good. The price is too high considering that I’m getting satellite quality coverage here, but I paid for 1 year, so I’ll use it when I’m bored. I plan on sucking it up, buying AppleTV and get my shows that way. If you can afford it and you want a product better than the odds you get from praying to the sun, don’t bother.
ABSOLUTELY USELESS. I made the mistake of signing up for a year to beneifit from the discounted rate. From day one the service was appalling. Lots of time wasted reconnecting to various servers, changing protocols and DNS… nothing improved the poor speed. After 6 days had enough and requested full refund. After a day or so got a reply saying I had exceeded the 10gig data limit and I would be charged one month at over 11 euros. They claimed I had used 10.14 gig…how convenient !!! There is no way to confirm this claim. So I have been charged one month and they cut my account straight away. So 11+ euros and loads of hassle for 6 days of crap. Since connected to free VPN and getting double the speed without tedium of constantly trying different settings. This outfit made have been good in the past but now are a complete shower……..AVOID
AVOID AT ALL COST, unless you want nothing for something and dishonesty. I signed up for a “free” trial whereby i could try with a 30 day money back guarantee. After a few days deciding it was not for me i requested a refund in accordance with their policy. They ignore emails and give no response after you request refund, so i am out $80. It has been over a week i have been requesting the refund. Live and learn from my mistake, STAY AWAY!!!
Most of the IPs don’t work. Beware of HideMyAss, they deny keeping logs, but the Lulz prosecution shows they must keep them. They deny using logs to help catch Lulz, but their explanation is nonsense. Beware.
I signed up with HMA as I was looking for an Australian IP address which my previous VPN could not give me. After using it for one week and pulling my hair out trying to load websites I decided to go elsewhere and get my money back with their 30 day money back guarantee. I have received email notification that the refund has been processed, now I just need to wait to see if it hits my credit card. Given their lovely customer services people called me a douche in the refund extra details field, I would stay away from this mob.
I also couldn’t load Facebook, I asked for help via email and got some generic crap advice (which I had already done anyway) which of course did not fix the problem. In the email replying to my request for a refund they blamed me for the slow speed as I had not “tweaked” my system according to their suggestions (not by the support person, but on their FAQ). I don’t want a service which requires extensive tweaking (despite the fact I know how to do it), I want a service which just works and HMA comes up short. I switched to WiTopia and so far so good. 20x faster, Facebook loaded straight away and they have 24/7 on-line chat support and I didn’t have to do a thing except install their software and click ‘connect’.
I used HMA for a few days and was never able to make their awful software work. I swapped emails with their tech services people the entire time. Then when it was clear it would not work and I asked for a refund they would not respond to my emails and have not initiated a refund. I have contacted PayPal now and initiated a dispute. I probably will never get a refund. So much for their MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. Avoid them.
I’ve seen this service rated in the Top 3 on several ratings sites, but have no idea how they were able to earn ANY kudos. I signed up for a trial month based on all the positive prose.
Their client software installed easily, and that is about all the positive remarks I can provide for HideMyAss. Could not get it to connect steadily, nor allow any NTTP traffic. Emailed them for help & was ignored for 2 days, then finally a short reply to the effect “maybe they blacklisted our servers”? I’ve emailed them 3 times asking for my refund, and again, no response. pit’s review below pretty much sums it up, once they have gotten your $$, that is all the interest they will show you.Their website lists having on line chat, but couldn’t for the life of me find a way to access it.
I switched to Astrill last night, for a complete 180 degree different experience.
I bought one month subscription of this vpn provider and I am quite disappointed,neither openvpn nor L2TP worked for me ,while I have quite good experience with other famous brands with these protocols,support is horrible,and they simply don’t like to hear from you.the money back guarantee is not as they say ,and they simply do not answer your requests.I guess that immense number of servers in the world is not an indicator of the quality of service of a provider and it requires a certain amount of technical knowledge which in my opinion this company lacks.overall not recommended
I tried this for one week DEC 2011 and I did not have luck, customer service very slow only via email, open vpn disconnects my internet connection…They tried to troubleshoot the problems but not successful, I got my money back after few emails and threatening (lool nothing comes easy in this world)
I use strongvpn for the last 2-3 years not the best but better than HMA, switchvpn etc.
What I like is super fast customer service 24/7 online.

But some servers still work, with good bw.
